Just another day...

Job-hunting unfortunately means a lot of keeping the phone line open, but seeing as I'm currently sending out emls to reply to ads...

I filed for unemployment, which will hopefully be a very temporary thing, but wow does it ever make me feel like a failure. A buddy of mine told me a while back that I was the sticking point in an argument that broke up a dying friendship. Apparently the other chick was insisting that anyone who's willing to try in this country can have a good life financially speaking. I guess I'm an example of the untruth of it. I have a Graphic design degree, I know I'm reasonably talented artistically speaking, I try making a living off my skills every way I can. I've ended up working a lot of retail with a few odd freelance graphics jobs, I've had no health insurance for years, and here I am selling art and filing for unemployment just to meet the bills and get a bad tooth taken care of. It makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong, and that's a fast track to getting depressed. I don't like blaming society or anybody else for my problems, but continually asking myself what I'm doing wrong, what it is about me that I'm failing when I feel like I try so hard, hasn't gotten me anywhere productive.
If an intelligent, hardworking person with some measure of talent and a college degree can't get a job, it's just possible there's something amiss at large.

On a lighter note for your entertainment, here's some stuff found in the job ads:

!CIRLCE ME!

On the meme front, yoinked from [livejournal.com profile] amethystlight
Ask any of my characters anything with any of your characters or however that meme goes.

I'll list the characters who can be questioned. You can ask questions with either your own RP characters or as yourself. You're welcome to question characters I don't play online if you're familiar with them, though. ;)
Character list on LJ:

Oh, there is. I know a lot of people in this position. Some have had long job searches, and some have also settled for retail. A few have settled for jobs that make them miserable but at least pay the bills. The "American Dream" just isn't what it used to be. ...And if I continue on that vein, I'll probably start ranting about our fool President, so I'll stop now. *HUGS* It isn't you, it's the rest of society that is epic fail.

Memery!

[livejournal.com profile] dirk__gently: What other profession would you choose if you couldn't be a Holistic Private Detective?

[livejournal.com profile] t_coleburn: What's your favorite non-research-related book?

[livejournal.com profile] agoodfellow: If something ever happened to Xanatos, would you take his place and carry on his empire, temporarily or permanently?

I've settled for retail, and I've even settled for really crappy jobs like the cleaners, to pay the bills. This last job I had was the best one I've ever had outside of college (Because you can't beat workstudy jobs). I guess it's the fact that there are people out there making it that leaves me feeling like it's a personal failure. On the other hand I realize luck has a big hand in it all. I haven't had that stroke of luck, I guess.

Dirk: I am admittedly impressed you consider my current self-inflicted title a profession, although I would argue that as I am perfectly suited to such a questionable 'career' it chose me, rather than the other way around. I have taken many roles in life, and continue to when detecting does not meet the bills. During slow periods I do fortune-telling to make ends meet, although I would appreciate your not disclosing that to the Revenue, as it is strictly an under the table sort of business, and in any case is not linked to my current name. Were I stripped of all capability to operate as a private detective in name, I would likely continue to stumble upon answers to the great mysteries of the universe, unprofessionally. This is an unlikely possibility due to circumstances which I am extremely reluctant to explain, but a professorship at a worthy college always seemed a very attractive prospect. Once one has seniority it is barely necessary to even teach classes and apart from the rigors of dodging the Dean it's a very cushy job.

Rey: Okay, now my fingers are sore.

T.C.: Works on celtic mythology, and music books. I actually own plenty that isn't research, and what is research isn't always what you'd expect.

Owen: Temporarily. If it ever becomes necessary, I will manage Xanatos Enterprises until such time as Alexander is ready and able to take over. This is a likely eventuality, if there are no drastic changes to the current circumstances.

Fiver wants to know if Fisher ever regrets killing an animal to eat its flesh, and if he ever talks to them before he eats them, and if he thinks about where they go after they die. Fiver is a morbid little bunny. Probably it is the Black Rabbit's influence.

Little Tom Riddle wants to know has Silens ever thought about wearing full armor like a knight and what it would look like if he did.

Gibbs wants to know if Rat would want to leave the City if there were a stable, non-Nexusy world to go to.

Sophie thinks she and Persephone should have a drink sometime, but I don't think that really calls for a response.

Fisher: Er, what? No, I don't regret it, and mostly we don't understand each other. Bet I couldn't understand you in my own world, but rabbits are usually a little out of my league.

Silens writes: Metal armor is very heavy expensive would make me too slow. I do not know what it would look like almost no one has it. I will not wear it because I would be too clumsy in fights.

Rat: ...Maybe. Maybe if the city were stable and free and people knew the truth, and certainly I'd leave along with everyone else if it became a necessity. I spent so long looking for the answers, and I don't like them now that I have them, but I feel a responsibility to the city for having them. I want to sort the city out and see it... reach maturation? The city is like a lost child right now, and it might be a hard journey to see the truth, but we have to grow up sometime.

Persephone: *smirk* I don't drink much, unless you count tea. I like my brain cells.
