Sooo last night we were doing the RP thing, and the MST3K thing, and a firetruck went down our street. After a minute or two there was another one, and there's only so much you can worry about these things because stuff does happen. The catch is any ambulance or firetruck coming down our street has to be coming to the apartments, because the other end is just part of the maze of little streets that's all apartments. They kept coming, and we were hearing more going down the street parallel to ours, and you couldn't really see anything from the porch. I got worried enough to put shoes on and go investigate.
On the street at a 90 degree angle to ours there was a fire, in one of the buildings shaped just like ours. It looked like it gutted the end apartment, but what's worse I could see smoke coming out of the attic at every vent, which means it may have gone the length of the building at the attic level. There were more emergency vehicles and police cars than I've ever seen in one place, and they had two fire hydrants pumping.
After that we stayed up with the TV on for the news, and called Bridgie's parents to make sure they wouldn't worry. Sure enough there was a mention, and this was about an hour after I went to look and they were live on the scene where it was still being put out and cleaned up. They mispelled the street name, but they said two people lived there and they both got out safely, which is exactly the kind of thing we were waiting and hoping to hear. I guess nobody could go to bed not knowing. There were intimations the building might have to come down, which doesn't surprise me. I don't know what that'll do to the window replacement schedule. They said on the news that it was pretty certain the cause was a simple kitchen greasefire.

It's awful, watching that kind of thing and knowing that the people living there probably lost everything. It's so sudden and unfair.

Things are a little off around our place today, we're still shivering over the thought of it. Probably try to go out somewhere and keep busy. I was going to post about having gone to see TF again, but I've kind of lost my attention span at the moment. I hate seeing smoke in the sky.
I'm glad no one was killed or badly hurt. I guess we should be grateful for that as a miracle. The whole front of the building at that apartment was black and firemen were chopping at the back doorframe, trying to kill the embers. I'm sure the smoldering stuff in the attic is what took them forever to put out. We're all lucky, ultimately. We're so lucky. That could have been us. Somehow, that it wasn't doesn't sit easy with me.
