Okay, first off, it snowed Sunday. It is 80 degrees today. I can't even... bwha??
Here is photo proof. Just trust me, that's proof. If you don't know me in person, I wear big clonky boots year round, I'm really not a barefoot kind of person, but today I had to go stand outside in the grass with bare feet. Because it is 80.
Thank you to the people who bought stuff off our Etsy shop or commissioned me, yesterday! The loan for the vet bill is covered, and any overflow will be used to keep my car able to go places, and maybe I can buy the kitty a collar and tag when she’s feeling better. Right now her rabies tag is still taped to a piece of paper. Also we scraped together enough to buy a couple fried chicken breasts. Breakfast is chicken at 2:00 in the afternoon but it is so delicious! Also bought bread. We’re eating lots of tuna sandwiches, partly because the sick kitty gets tuna water that way.

The cat… is doing a little better. Last night she got up and wandered around a little, and scratched at the door trying to get out to see the other cat. They have seen each other once, that first night, and she actually growled a little but we think she was on the defensive because she’s not feeling well and uncertain of her place, while Froggy actually… seemed confused. Not at all aggressive, just kind of curious and wondering why the new kitty was growling. That seems like a good sign, but we’re keeping them separated until the new kitty is better because respiratory stuff can be contagious. Froggy is bummed she can’t play with her new friend yet. There has been absolutely zero hissing, and she seems to really just want to see the other cat, and this is a way more awesome reaction than we’d hoped for. We were afraid she’d be aggressive about having a new cat in her house, but I guess it’s been a short enough time since Squeaks’ passing, and she seems to really miss her. Toward the end, when Squeaks didn’t want to leave the bed anymore, Froggy would abandon us to go lay beside her.
Can’t write about that anymore or I’ll cry.
Anyways, the new kitty is very… weird. There’s no other word for it. She has the most bizarre collection of habits I have ever seen in a cat. Point one: we made up a basket for her. It used to be the doorside dumping place for my hat and keys, gloves, etc. but we emptied and put in an old sweater and a towel in preparation so she’d have a nice little bed to retreat to. I knew this was just us kidding ourselves. Cats never want to sleep in the nice bed you make for them. We’ve had cats, we’ve fostered kittens and found homes for them, and no cat wants to sleep in something you give them to sleep in. But she does. She understood right away it’s her bed and she goes there to sleep. In the bedroom, she’ll also sleep on the bed, but she always returns to the basket.
Point two: She does not seem to quite understand how dishes work. Or… kibble, or water. She eats kibble like she’s not sure how to deal with it, and doesn’t even notice it until you entice her to. Offering to hand feed her rarely does it, but tricks like dropping a piece in the water bowl somehow makes her realize ‘oh, there is food here in this bowl thing, and I could eat that!’ She can’t seem to understand the other dish has water in it, all the time, but if you turn on the faucet she’s excited. Last night she wouldn’t drink until I set the bowl under the tub faucet and made it drip. This morning, my gf had to splash the water in the bowl to make her realize it was liquid.
Point three: Point two sounds like feral cat habits, and we don’t know how long she was a stray or if she was abused before. Those habits should come along with other habits like being defensive of food and water, being wary, or generally being scared. She is the polar opposite of these things. What drew me to her was from moment one, first visiting her at the shelter, she trusted me absolutely. I have had her two and a half days now. I can pet her stomach and inspect the incision from where she was spayed. I can play with her ears, her tail. She wouldn’t eat the pill pocket for her antibiotic so I had to shove the pill down her throat and she did not even struggle, I didn’t hold her body at all, just opened her mouth and popped it in and stroked her throat, and she swallowed no problem. I can move her dish around or put stuff in it while she’s eating. She rolls on her back up against me (I think because the stitches are uncomfortable). She acts like she has known me and trusted me her entire life. She didn’t even take a swat at the vet. She is so mellow it’s uncatlike.
So. I don’t know what to think. She’s bizarre but in wonderful ways. We’ll see if any of these habits change when she’s feeling better. I’m bewildered.
Oh, also, she has an ‘S’ on her chest. We hope it’s for Superkitty, not Sick kitty.
