Still here, *waves* still inking Shiri's commission because OMG Transformers are hard! I lack the technical precision to do real mechanical drawing. I'm doing a pretty good job BSing it though.
Last week was... I dunno. I have a lot of stuff to do today, and instead I'm posting on LJ.
I don't even want to talk about the car, but as a brief update it is living on borrowed time right now. We're torn between repair and junking it to get another car instead. The inspection is due next month, which complicates things a little. Either choice is coming out of other people's pockets, which on the one hand is amazing and incredible and thank you because we can't afford anything right now, but on the other hand everyone is telling me that ultimately I'm the one who gets to decide. Nobody else, just me. Deciding what to do with other people's money is way more stressful than deciding what to do with my own.
Just wanted to say I'm not dead, basically. Hopefully my next post will be art again. Everybody loves art, right guys? Right? The last post was art...

Date: Sep. 8th, 2008 06:29 pm (UTC)I think we're going with the repair option. Just got back from visiting with the mechanic again. He thinks the car has another year minimum if we repair it, which is really all we can ask out of an '84.

Also, Mom got a number for us that's a toll free call. So you could call us instead of us always calling you.

Date: Sep. 9th, 2008 04:50 pm (UTC)As for the car and deciding what to do: In the long run, it might be to your benefit to get a new car. You wouldn't have to constantly worry about it breaking down or failing at an important moment, and getting something fuel efficient would also be a benefit in the long run. There are options for monthly payments that fit most budgets. You just have to feel out the right car dealer. We went to just look at cars one day and at the first lot we stopped off at (a general sales type), while we were perusing the selection a car dealer came over and immediately started pressing vehicles at us. We quickly left and headed down the road to an official Toyota lot. We were able to look around without anyone pouncing on us, and when we were ready to ask about a Scion, they had the information we wanted and didn't try to convince us of anything -- other than the benefits of buying a new car rather than wait for a used one to become available (it seems Scion owners don't want to let go of their cars. I think that's a sign of a good investment. :) ). It all made sense and felt genuine.

Date: Sep. 10th, 2008 03:55 pm (UTC)Eheheheh... something more fuel efficient is out of the question, as is a new car. My total budget is $2000 and that's my dad's money. That's it. Monthly payments are out of the question when I'm jobless and we're barely making rent. I think we're going to go with the repair option, which is less than half that budget, and my father will give me some money left over from that so we can actually pay bills. Paying utilities is good. Knowing I might be able to pay the dentist to at least look my teeth over is good.
We're hoping a year or so down the road (which the mechanic says he thinks the car will be good for once we replace the transmission), I might have a job where we can talk about getting a better, newer car.
